Difference between CV and Resume

As we all know CV and Resume are the formats in which we write about ourselves; our bio data or most importantly our work experiences and academic qualifications for new job applications, but they have some differences even though they are for the same purpose. So, let us find out what are the differences between a CV and a Resume.

CV short for Curriculum Vitae is detailed document where you mention your academic qualification, awards or special honors that you have received, grants or scholarships if any along with academic projects that you have completed and if you have published anything of your own. Then after that you write about your career history if you are not applying for the first time for any job. But if we talk about Resume, then a Resume is basically a document which summarizes your academia along with your skills and career history. This is why CV is generally longer like 2 pages long or even exceed up to 6 pages whereas Resume is shorter like it generally consists of only 1 page or maybe 2 pages long.

Now, talking about other differences, CVs are mostly focused on career whereas Resumes are mostly focused on skill oriented jobs even though both of them are for professional use. The other difference is in the format of how you present yourself through your document and in which kind of job you are applying for and also of which country. So, mostly CVs include your contact information, personal statement, professional association, academic qualifications, skills, previous work experiences if any, if you have been involved or previously been involved in any kind of volunteer work, professional association, have won any awards, got certificates for winning or participating in anything that you did, how many languages you know, etc. Whereas for Resume, you don’t have to include everything or maximum details and just write about your academic qualifications, your work previous work experiences and volunteer works that you have done if any, skills that you have along with relevant certificates you received and your name and contact information.

Since Curriculum Vitae literally means events pertaining to life in Latin, it has a detail oriented format whereas Resume actually meaning Summary in French, it is basically just the overall summary of your academia and previous employment in a short form. Besides that, you can even include references in CV while references are not necessary in case of Resume.
